About
Dr. Kuriloff

Daniel B. Kuriloff, M.D, FACS is a board certified, Fellowship trained Head & Neck Surgeon. He received his medical training from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and graduated with Honors in Surgery. After completing two years of general surgery training at Albany and Beth Israel medical Centers, he pursued his Otolaryngology training at The New York Eye & Ear Infirmary. He later completed a Joint Council certified Fellowship for Advanced Training in Head and Neck Oncologic (cancer) Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Microvascular Surgery at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Kuriloff's area of interest and expertise involves Head & Neck Endocrine Surgery for disorders of the thyroid & parathyroid glands. He has a vast experience, having performed over 2,000 thyroid & parathyroid  related surgeries in his career.  He has perfected the art & science of his surgical practice and has adopted the latest advances in the field, including minimally invasive surgery, through the smallest possible incisions, using plastic surgery skin closure techniques. Laryngeal nerve monitoring is also routinely performed during surgery and adds a second layer of protection for preservation of a normal voice.  Minimally invasive parathyroid surgery is now focused to the side of the tumor using preoperative imaging studies and parathyroid hormone sampling during the actual surgery.

Dr. Kuriloff has extensive surgical experience treating both singers and public speakers--from cantors and reggae singers to television reporters.

Dr. Kuriloff routinely performs ultrasound imaging of the neck in his office.  With ultrasound guidance, he has now perfected the technique of rapid skinny needle diagnosis of thyroid and parathyroid tumors and other neck masses. He has written on this subject in a medical textbook on office-based surgery.  In many cases, a biopsy diagnosis is available within 24 hours.

Dr. Kuriloff is a fervent advocate of patient education and has received many teaching awards from his peers.  He is a recipient of the distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, for his participation as a course instructor and involvement in other teaching activities for the academy. He spends considerable time listening to his patients and explains the entire treatment process from start  to finish in a supportive and caring manner. He has written several patient guides and uses these to help educate his patients.

Dr. Kuriloff has received numerous awards and is a well-known contributor to medical journals and textbooks. He continues to be at the cutting edge of his specialty through his ongoing research and teaching activities. He is a peer reviewer for medical journals on the subject of thyroid and parathyroid surgery. In 1990 he was honored as the recipient of the prestigious Investigator Development Grant from The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and has received several other grants to support his pioneering work in reconstructive surgery. His past research activities have included the development of an implantable, adjustable prosthesis to restore voice following vocal cord paralysis, tissue transplant viability monitoring using special biosensors, bone/cartilage induction molding for tracheal reconstruction and transplantation, and microvascular free tissue transfer for tracheal reconstruction.  Dr. Kuriloff holds a US patent for a surgical suction cautery dissector.

Dr. Kuriloff has been recognized by various organizations as among the “top surgeons” in America. He has been listed by Castle Connolly's Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area, Listed by Consumers Research Council of America in The Guide to America’s Top Physicians, and most recently, he was cited by Key Professional Media in the New York Times Magazine as a 2008 Super Doctor, " one of the top 5% of New York City physicians in more than 30 specialties". He was also cited in the 2008 edition of New York Magazine's "Best Doctors," http://nymag.com/bestdoctors/

Dr. Kuriloff is an Associate Director of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center and is an Associate Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is an Assistant Attending on the Otolaryngology Service at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
